Me in the picture of the varsity soccer team in 1986 when I was a senior in high school. Bet my knees would love me if I tried that now...
Senseless fun
April 22, 2009 OK, I haven't update the site other than to add my Twitter feed since November....so where's the music... I've been keeping everything up to date on Facebook. I'll get back over here sooner or later, I promise. In the meantime, go check out this site and have a few moments of Web-based fun everyday. It's weirdly, oddly, fascinatingly stupid and fun.
November 11, 2008 Several shows in the last month or so. I'll drop the pics and description below...played with my high school big band--the Buena Show Band, Sabra's Tucson Pride gig, Amber's Vail Fall Music Festival show, and Ozlo's return to Tucson for a fundraiser to help the Arizona Hemophilia Association. They were all great fun and I'm blessed to get to perform with such a great set of musicians.
I played in a big band for the 4 years (83-87) I was in high school under the direction of the amazing Rick "Coach" Klein. I recorded 2 albums with the band, one in 1984 and one in 1988 (the year after I graduated). The Buena Show Band was an amazing musical experience for me. I never lost the thrill of performing in front of an audience...and the joy of rehearsing with a team of musicians to make a collaborative artistic statement. Coach runs the Buena Performing Arts Center down in Sierra Vista now and still conducts the Show Band. This summer he invited me to be a featured artist for the band's September Friends Concert. It was a blast...performed a couple of songs and sat in for the rest of the evening.

Sabra Faulk is the Queen of Tucson Funk. I play with her regularly as she fills in as the bassist for Amber Norgaard's band. We had the opportunity in October to perform as her backup band (and perform a few Amber tunes) as part of the Tucson Pride festival. Great crowd and lots of fun!
From left to right: Michelle Maliniak, Sabra Faulk, Doug Floyd, Amber Norgaard,
Will Clipman.
Amber's been my main gig for the last few years. Wonderful songwriter, singer and performer...and generous to allow her musicians to spread their wings and color her songs with their unique styles. The Vail Music Festival was a fun exercise in how not to melt while performing. We had the opportunity to play with Ryan Janac of Sunday Afternoon, as Will Clipman took the day off to display his drum chops elsewhere ;)

Sabra Faulk.
Ozlo was my main gig from 2004 until 2006 when he headed for Atlanta. We've fallen into a groove of annual November appearances. This year, the show benefited the Arizona Hemophilia Association as part of their Tucson Salsa Challenge. It's a fun group of musicians to perform with and some of my favorite songs I've ever contributed to.

June 2, 2008 I played with Amber and Will Clipman as a trio at J-Bar last week. Such an outstanding environment for a show of this sort. My buddy Paul Curtis snapped this pic, as well as recorded the video.
May 1, 2008 I have a series of shows coming up with Amber Norgaard in various band configurations. So far, they include:
May 10 - Irish Pub - Acoustic show with Amber, Sabra Faulk and Michelle Maliniak
May 23 - Nimbus Brewery - Electric show with Amber, Sabra
and Will Clipman
May 28 - J-Bar - Acoustic show with Amber, Will Clipman and Michelle Maliniak. Great outdoor patio location.
June 6 - Javalina's - Amber, Sabra, and Will. Another great outdoor venue, family friendly.
July 5 - Javalina's - Amber, Sabra, Will, and Michelle. Another great outdoor venue, family friendly.
July 25 - Irish Pub - Acoustic show with Amber, Sabra and Michelle.
October 18 - Pride In the Desert (Randolph Park Band Shell) - Amber, Sabra, Michelle, and Will.
Below is a video clip from a March 7, 2008 show with Amber and crew at Cooperstown up in Phoenix, and shot of Amber and I getting our groove on from the same show.

March 26, 2008 I played with Amber at Downtown Saturdays back on March 15th. A friend of her's shot a bit of the show with their digital camera. Below is our closer, the title song from Amber's last album "Rising."
March 13, 2008 A friend turned me on to this interesting take on the concept of the long tail. Liked it enough to post it here for those of you some day looking to have career success in some sort of individual way.
March 5, 2008 Amber put up one of the tunes we recorded last weekend on YouTube, an old classic from her "Soul In Motion" album called "Bob Schmidt."
Live In The Studio With Amber
March 1, 2008 I performed live at Luna Recording Studios this evening with Amber Norgaard and band. We held the session as a demo for a pitch to do a live weekly radio show. This was the first time I've ever tried to record live playing acoustic guitar....OUCH! But I think we came off well. Had about 20 folks join us in the studio to give it a better vibe. Below is a pic of the band running down a tune...from left: Michelle Maliniak, Me (Doug Floyd), Will Clipman, Amber Norgaard, and Jay Trapp. The picture was taken by the lovely and talented Anna Dibble.
February 10, 2008 My oldest daughter Ashleigh plays for the Rincon/University Rangers Girl's Varsity Soccer Team. Last night, they finished off a brilliant run in the playoffs by winning the Division 5A-II State Championship. This was Ash's senior year and probably last year of soccer...what a brilliant way to go out!
Ashleigh is second from left above. Below shot is pre-game warmup.
January 28, 2008 Perpetually behind on updating the site, I finally got around to putting together a collage of pictures my friend Anna Dibble took at a recent show (on January 4th) with Amber Norgaard.
The four of us, with Sabra on acoustic guitar, joined by Jay Trapp on bass, and Michelle Maliniak on trumpet will be playing at Nimbus Brewery on February 1st, from 8-11pm. Below is a picture of the band, minus Sabra, at Nimbus in November, 2007.
Winery Music Awards
October 7, 2007 I performed tonight at the Winery Music Awards finals with Amber Norgaard. We played great and received 2nd place out of 100 bands.
Below are 3 different version of Rectify....don't ask me why....there just are 3 different ones ;)
August 30, 2007 My buddy Lee is the Associate General Counsel at Fender Music Corporation. It appears that the Fender staff found a better use for his good looks and hot licks than writing and reviewing contracts, as evidenced by his appearance in this awesome Fender demo video for one of their new products:
August 16, 2007Tucson Weekly holds an annual reader's poll where readers of the paper, live music fans/attendees, and musicians vote for their favorites on a number of categories. For 2007, I was voted Best Electric Guitarist. I'm very flattered to receive that level of fan support for doing something I love so much.
I also played on the runner-up for Best New Release, Amber Norgaard's "Rising." Amber was selected as the Up And Coming Artist of the Year so yay Amber! I'd also like to congratulate my long-time musical cohort, Jim Pavett, for winning the award for Best Drummer and runner-up for Best Producer/Engineer for his work at Allusion Studios (http://www.allusionstudios.com/). Amber and Michelle Maliniak, the trumpet player in Amber's band, were also runner-up in a couple of categories.
August 9, 2007 I play off and on with an awesome cat named Ozlo. Singer, songwiter, playa...you name it. One of the songs we recorded for his debut solo album is called "Richard the Rooster." Here's Ozlo peforming it solo, in costume:)
March 15, 2007 The Arizona Daily Star did a quick Q&A with Amber the other day as a preview to our show at the 17th Street Market (yeah, that's right, we rocked a grocery store.....) Interesting side effect, we had a quite the gathering of the snow-capped crowd--I'm not quite sure they appreciated the rock 'n roll side of the band so much ;)
January 22, 2007 Tucson (and most of southern Arizona) got hit by a nice little snow storm last night. The kids are excited to have a rare Arizona snow day off from school:) Here's a picture of the Rincon Mountains from our backyard.
The Real Star Wars Story
January 22, 2007 A friend sent me this amusing take on what was really going on in the first Star Wars movie (Episode 4 for you neophytes) now that we've seen the first 3 episodes. Give it a read.
Garrison Keillor on Methodists
January 10, 2007 While I'm not an organized religion adult, I grew up in the Methodist church. While I have found my inner peace and sense of purpose in other ways (firmly rooted in the lessons of my parents), I have fond memories of the people, the friends, the experience of the church. Mostly I enjoyed the fact that our church was right next to McDonald's, so a soft serve ice cream cone was only a 5 second sprint away. Garrison Keillor wrote an incredibly accurate depiction of Methodist life that made me smile so hard when I read it that I have to share.
June 16, 2006 Amber has been on the road in the
midwest by herself promoting the new album so we haven't been playing
much (she did take us all on a backup CD so she can play to the
band when she wants:) ).
We'll
be back
playing as a live band next week with a show on the 22nd at J-Bar (Jano's
Restaurant at La Paloma) and on the 24th at The Keys. The J-Bar show
will include frequent
fill-in bass player Mark Brugler--who also helped out on a few Ozlo shows.
Amber and I recently did a private party. This is me warming up beforehand--my wife liked the shot alot so thought I'd post it (she probably most likes it because I was clean shaven;) ).
A Pic With Amber from the Street Fair
May 20, 2006 This is a shot from a show with Amber a month or two back at the 4th Avenue Street Fair. I'll be playing with Amber tonight at The Planet coffeehouse.

"Rising" Has Risen
May 11, 2006 Amber's album arrived today. Sounds and looks great. Release party is this Friday at Javalinas and will feature the whole band.
Here's a copy of the album cover.
Live Show Update
May 9, 2006 I've got several shows with Amber Norgaard currently on the calendar, plus we'll be releasing the new album on May 12, 2006.
May 12, 8-10pm - Javalinas Coffee and Friends - Doug, Amber, Jim, and Jay. CD Release Party for Amber's new album, "Rising"
June 22, 7-10pm - J-Bar - Doug, Amber, Jim, and Jay
June 24, 9pm-1am - The Keys - Doug, Amber, Jim, and Jay

August 10, 7-10pm - J-Bar - Doug, Amber, Jim, and Jay
September 9, 9pm-1am - The Keys - Doug, Amber, Jim, and Jay
An Amber Update
January 27, 2006 We were on the radio this past Monday evening on KXCI's Locals Only show hosted by Don Jennings. The show was a combination of live performance in the KXCI studio, some album cuts from the upcoming album "Rising," and a live interview with Amber. The show was terrific and generated a couple of upcoming gigs. More info about gigs, the album, and other Amber trivia can be found at AmberNorgaard.com. Amber also has a MySpace site.

The 4 Pigs Return, Briefly
December 30, 2005 On December 27th, we were able to stage a 4 Pigs reunion before Greg Sword moves to Australia. Lots of playing, drinking, eating, and poker. Fun was had by all, as were hangovers of gargantuan proportions.
Props to Dave Nelson for hosting the festivites, to his wife Christine for not freaking out when she saw how much we'd rearranged her beautiful house, and to James Kemery for the loaned gear (not all of which survived).
Doug Floyd, Chris Tumpkin, Wayne Beaudoin, Greg Sword, Mike Geddes
December 11, 2005 We would like to wish all of our friends and family a very Merry Christmas.
It's Time for Roundball!
November 16, 2005 This is my favorite sports season--college basketball. It helps that the UofA is a perennial national power--but even without them, the competition is so pure. Sports Illustrated is featuring Arizona on one of their 4 special covers to start the season, as part of their college basketball preview (where they have the Wildcats ranked 6th).
So Long, Ozlo
November 14, 2005 Ozlo's going away show was a blast. HUUUUUUGE crowd and we played great. Spacefish put on a terrific opening show too. Below is a shot of Tracy and I with Ozlo before we went on.
New Ozlo Tunes
November 8, 2005 I recently recorded at KXCI with Ozlo for broadcast during the KXCI Locals Only Show, hosted by Don Jennings. We took the opportunity to play a few new, unrecorded tunes. Give them a listen by clicking the links below (or right click and choose Save to store them on your local hard drive).
Here's a shot of me playing with Ozlo at Club Congress, October 21, 2005.
Les Paul - An American Guitar Legend
November 4, 2005 I started playing guitar at the age of 10, mostly inspired by the fold out picture of the 2 LP Kiss set, "Alive II." That picture of a stage in flames and larger than life rockers really clicked with me. The other major factor was thinking Ace Frehley was the coolest guitar player ever. He played a Gibson Les Paul, so a Les Paul I had to have. My first one was an Ibanez knock off that I trashed. For my high school graduation, my parents bought me a sparkling new, custom-ordered Gibson. I still play that guitar everyday, 18 years later. Like the Ibanez, it too is trashed. In my mind, a guitar should look like an old pickup. Mechanically perfect but well-worn and loved. It should look like it does the job.
Anyhow...the point. The Gibson Les Paul was designed by guitar (and electronics) master--that's right....you guessed it....Les Paul. He's now 91 years old and still going strong. I think he's actually down to only having servicable use of 2 fingers on his fretting hand but he still gigs weekly and records music. He just released his first rock album--he was mainly a jazz player--that features many guitar heavyweights.
Here's a shot of me playing my Les Paul at Plush in Tucson, AZ at a gig with Ozlo in September of 2005.
My Soccer Girls
October 28, 2005 My two oldest girls play soccer. Ashleigh, on the right, plays for the Ft. Lowell Soccer Club--U-19 girls--(and the Rincon High School team). Amy (on the left) plays for the Randolph Soccer Club--U-13 girls. Here are a couple of shots from 2005 tournaments.
Summer Ozlo Show Pics
August 28, 2005 This summer, I played a couple of shows with Ozlo at City Limits, one of the nicer live music venues in Tucson. Here are a couple of pics from our show there opening for Sunday Afternoon.
Demetri, Doug and Ozlo.

Playing Out...and Stuff
August 11, 2005 I'm so far behind in updating that I'm not going to even try to get up to speed.
I'm working on Amber Norgaard's new album and we're also doing some live shows. Here's a pic collage from our show up at J-Bar at La Paloma from July.
Good People, Bad Ideas
April 15, 2005 A developer here at work passed along the following URL. My favorite quote:
"That's the essence of a startup: having brilliant people do work that's beneath them. Big companies try to hire the right person for the job. Startups win because they don't-- because they take people so smart that they would in a big company be doing "research," and set them to work instead on problems of the most immediate and mundane sort. Think Einstein designing refrigerators."
Us Floyds hope you all have a terrific holiday season! (Doug, Amy, Ashleigh, Tracy, and Clara)
Done, At Last
July 6, 2004 Finished my guitar tracks on the Ozlo album last night. Feeling very relieved. Now, I just have to give them the final couple of weeks of scrutiny (meaning, drive around alot listening to them in the car) to make sure there's nothing I want to change (meaning, fix). This was the first time I'd heard Ozlo's completed vocals. Holy Cow! He's really a brilliant singer. The harmonys are just....well....hard to describe without being redundant. It's amazing. Can't wait for the public to hear this!
Soul In Motion
July 2, 2004 I received a final master of Amber Norgaard's album Soul In Motion today. I'm playing guitar on 4 of the songs. The whole thing sounds great. She has a beautiful voice and writes inspirational songs. Now the hard part--I have to relearn those 4 tunes, plus the rest of the album and a few covers for the CD release party in August. I hope to get some samples up on this site, and a link to ways purchase the album as well when it's finally back from duplication.
June 29, 2004 More guitar work on the Ozlo album last night. Wrapped up the solos on "So Very Happy," "The Antique Store Song," and "Mad Game." Tried to wrap "I Found You" but had to bail on it--just couldn't find the vibe. Worked a bit on the middle section of "No-tel Motel." Should be wrapping up next Monday.
Live...
June 20, 2004 Played last night with Ozlo. We did a Casino Night fundraiser for the Women's 20-30 club at the Savoy Opera House at Pinnacle Peak. We had Rich Katz sitting in on keys. It was an interesting night...we were background ambiance playing loud rock 'n roll. Those that paid attention did seem to enjoy us, so I guess we'll call it a success.
I started out the day laying down some more Ozlo tracks in the studio. I knocked out some musical pieces for the DVD that will accompany the CD release, plus I wrapped the solos on "Take It All" and "Windows Down."
Are My Fingers Bleeding Yet?
June 18, 2004 Recorded 5 more songs with Jon Miller last night--some solos and rhythm parts. He really writes tasty tunes, so I can't wait to get some samples up here.
After that session, Jim and I jumped in to some Ozlo work. I finished up the rhythm parts to "Green Love" and laid down some solos--which sucked. Will redo those at a later date.
I did some work for a really cool guy named Bryan Snyder a while back. The album finally came out and I got my copies last night. The album is called Underbelly. I played on the songs "Alibi" and "Textures" along with Jim Pavett, Stev Rubio and Rich Katz. Should be popping some samples up online this weekend. Bryan's site is knutz.net.
Broken Record....
June 8, 2004 More recording last night. D got the bass to "Green Love" done and I got the lead work done on "Girls Gone Wild" and "So Much Time"--I think I was channeling Santana for that one. Ozlo should be in this week getting some more vocals wrapped and I'll be cranking away on more leads, as well as the rhythm tracks for "Green Love" and maybe a few other filler parts.
Back In The Studio
June 6, 2004 I spent another 4 hours in the studio on Saturday recording acoustic guitar parts for the Ozlo album. It's sounding really good. Ozlo has finished up 4 tunes vocally. We'll be back in on Monday night, laying bass tracks for "Green Love," rhythm guitar parts for "Green Love," and solos on some of the tunes.
Musicians and Their Mentors
June 3, 2004 My daughter is a flautist and a soon-to-be freshman in the Rincon University High School Marching Band. I was excited to hear from many people how exceptional their music program and director was. I had the good fortune to attend Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona during the tenure of Rick "Coach" Klein--a most phenomenal man and musician. Educators of this sort are the lifeblood of society--a fact we seldom realize. Sadly, Rincon's director of bands died suddenly a few days ago of a heart attack. The Tucson Weekly ran a really nice obituary this week.
May 30, 2004 My father has been battling major health issues for the better part of my life. Chronic arthritis, carpal tunnel, and spinal problems have hampered his physical life for at least a couple of decades now. Through it all, he always made time to coach sports, provide leadership in Boy Scouts, share his amazing piano playing talents with his church community, attend performances and sporting events of his children, continue his own education, and provide a terrific home for his family.
Over the last 3 years, he has been debilitated by a spinal chord injury that is still mostly mysterious. The story is long, and mostly inspiring. He's worked hard over the last few years to beat this, but the last several weeks have seen his health deteriorate badly. It heartbreaking to see such a wonderful man with so much to give have to stop teaching and lose so much of his independence. My sister-in-law recently posted a wonderful entry in her 'blog. Give it a read.
May 24, 2004 6 hours Friday, 12 hours Saturday, 11 hours Sunday....and still going. We've got some shots from the first few recording sessions up online at Ozloland.com
Busy day back in the studio
May 17, 2004 I spent hours in the studio today. First, I did a couple of solos for a talented singer/songwriter--Jon Miller. The tunes were very tasty...not always the case when doing studio work. I'll try to get them up once I get mastered versions.
I wrapped up the day in the studio for the last day of preproduction on the Ozlo CD. We'll be recording the album this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Allusion Studios. Here's a quick pick from the control room after the session.
More Gear...
May 14, 2004 I recently updated the gear section to now include my amp and effects.
May 11, 2004 Another session at Allusion Studios working with a singer named Tamara (pronounced like tomorrow) from L.A. A couple of country/rock/blues bits that I laid rhythm and leads on. Will put up some audio when the tracks are mastered.
In the Studio, Still...
May 6, 2004 I'm currently in preproduction on Ozlo's album. We took some shots during the session on Monday, May 3rd.
May 1, 2004 I was in the studio yesterday with a terrific singer, Amber Norgaard. My job was to add a more progressive element. Things sounded good and we got through the final 4 songs for her album fairly quickly. I hope to get some samples up online once the songs are mastered. I'll be playing with Amber for her album release party in Okoboji, Iowa on August 21st.
April 25, 2004 After months and months of avoidance, I finally got around to posting new pictures of the family and rearranging some thing to be better organized. Swing over to the Family Pics area and have a look.
April 9, 2004 Been gigging with Ozlo and trying out potential bass players for the band (Mik Garrison has been a real trooper filling in while we audition folks). Anyhow, check out the pics.
March 21, 2004 Just got back from a fun-filled four day trip to Vegas with some buddies from high school and college. The above picture was taken at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay.
February 14th, 2004 After almost two years off--maybe it has been two years--I'm back playing live music. I recently joined the band of a terrific singer and songwriter named Ozlo.
I first became familiar with Ozlo in the early 90's when he was the front man for one of my favorite local bands, Itsy Bitsy Spiders. On my first tour after joining Funky Bonz, Ozlo went along for the ride, singing and playing trombone.
I played my first gig with Ozlo last night, headlining the KXCI Locals Only album release show at Plush (hosted by Don Jennings). We only got to throw out 4 songs due to the full schedule of bands, but it was a great high energy 20 minutes. Also on the gig was full-time drummer Jim Pavett and fill-in bassist Mik Garrison (also formerly of Itsy Bitsy Spiders and The Bunkosquad). The set included Girls Gone Wild, I Found You, Richard The Rooster, and Windows Down (which is on the KXCI album).
More live shows should be coming soon and a full-length album should be under works soon--Ozlo already has a good deal of the material ready. The band is looking for a full-time bass player so drop me a line if you're a Tucson-area bass player looking for full-time gig.
